Mid-Summer Produce

fruits and veggiesSummer has been flying by and as expected, it has been a hot one! We have already been exposed to some of the best produce, but luckily there is still more to come. Eating fresh is best! Knowing when items are in season is the key to knowing what to look for when shopping.
Why eat seasonally? Eating fresh local produce when it is in season offers a variety of benefits including: products are fresher and tastier; nutritional value of products is optimized; it encourages a diverse diet; and it is often more economical. Let’s see what July has to offer.

The fruits that are currently a hot commodity include blueberries, watermelon, plums, oranges, and my personal favorite peaches!
Just a few of the summer specialty vegetables entering the market include a variety of summer squash, cucumbers, bell peppers, eggplant, green beans, and potatoes. Corn just hit its peak season and will be available through September and tomatoes are quickly becoming delightfully irresistible!

Whether you are picking from your garden or shopping at your local grocery store, be sure to check out these summer foods!
